CURRENT STATUS AND DEVELOPMENT OF HEALTH MANPOWER IN KOREA

Abstract

|
This paper reviewed the current status and prospect of the all licensed and qualified
health manpower in Korea and discussed the problems pertaining to them. The kind of
health manpower to be developed was listed together with justification. Also the role of the
schools of public health in developing such health manpower was discussed.
Specific recommendations for the health manpower development are as following;
1. There is need to develop such health manpower as community mental health: specialist, public health nutritionist, blood and blood component manager, health information specialist, clinical social worker, industrial health diagnosis specialist, language:, therapist, walking trainer, vocational trainer, auditory trainer, sensory trainer, and ¢¥,prosthetic device technician.
2. Schools of public health should reinforce their faculty, curriculum, facilities and equipments to train better health manpower for health administration, health economics, health planning, hospital management, environmental engineering, and industrial health.
3. New health manpower development should be based on a long-term plan for the quality and quantity of manpower, its utilization and evaluation. The health manpower planning should be integrated with training and management.
4. Government should review the criteria for qualification and license of the health manpower and develop a system for the adequate utilization of the graduates of schools of public health.
